Ellen Miller Braun was born and educated in Chicago Illinois, U.S.A. She studied
fine arts at Northeastern Illinois University. An ardent Zionist, Ellen immigrated to
Israel with her husband and children in 1983.
Ellen's traditionally observant Jewish background has guided and inspired her in
the development of the Biblical themes of her artwork.
The present finds Ellen working with painstaking patience in micro-calligraphy.
Her beautiful micro-calligraphy pieces are unique in their development. Ellen first
sketches the desired design. This drawing is then etched onto paper that will
become the "original". Dipping her pen into watercolor paints, Ellen follows the
flowing lines of her etched design, inscribing portions from the Torah, Prophets
and Writings. She thus fills each piece of artwork with dramatic color and life. The
tiny colorful writing of each piece flows together developing and creating each
exquisite picture. The writing is the picture, and the picture is the writing. Each
creation is a beautiful display of vibrant color and spirituality.
These pieces, as well as Ellen's past work, patiently hand-sewn sculptures of
whimsical Hasidic and Biblical figures, are being enjoyed in homes around the
world.
