But where shall wisdom be found? And where is
the place of understanding? It cannot be valued in
the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx or sapphire.
Gold and glass cannot equal it, Nor can it be
exchanged for vessels of fine gold. Glass is
mentioned only once in the Bible - in the book of
Job. There, in ranking the comparative importance
of wisdom and understanding, Job lists glass
together with gold, precious stones, and other
materials of great value. When this passage was
written, in the mid-1st millennium NCE, glass was
still a rare and expensive material. Yet among the
other exotic materials with which it is grouped, it is
the only one which does not occur in nature; rather
it is man-made, discovered only 5,000 years ago,
and thus relatively new among other invented
mediums, such as pottery and metal. The manner in
which man first discovered how to produce glass
from sand still remains a mystery, and we can only
marvel at the achievements of its ancient artisans
and admire their ingenuity.
