This stately Egyptian figurine of a nude woman
lying on a bed was found in the ancient
cemetery near Deir-el-Balah, south of Gaza.
The plague representing the bed has a pillow
carved at the head-end and a projection
representing the footrest at the bottom. The
woman's body is modeled in high, almost
sculptural relief. The face and upper part of the
body are full; the lower part is slender, with
relatively thin legs. She wears earrings and a
bracelet on her left arm. The figurine was
probably used as a funary object and placed in
the tomb to serve the deceased in the afterlife.
The Deir el-Balah cemetery was located
nearby a stronghold established by the
Egyptians on the main route from the Nile
Delta to Canaan.
