Until copper smelting was invented some time before 4000 BC ,the people of the Holy Land made weapons out of wood, bone and stone. As the early Bronze Age cities grew, the techniques of warfare developed and armies were established.

The more advanced metalworking of this period provided soldiers with mass-produced swords, spears, and axes. Initially these were made of copper, later of bronze. Later in the Bronze Age war and weapons became more sophisticated, with field battles involving cavalry and chariots; well-defended cities were attacked using siege equipment. The Philistines probably introduced ironworking into Canaan around 1200 BC; after this, iron weapons gradually replaced bronze ones.
