This replica of an Egyptian limestone
statuette from the Middle Kingdom
period depicts a pair of copulating frogs.
Although the Egyptians were keen
observes of nature, it seems they were
unaware of the connection between
copulation and birth. The annual
appearance of tadpoles after the
inundation of the Nile was seen as a
spontaneous phenomenon. The frog thus
came to symbolize regeneration, and frog
amulets were placed in tombs.
