My Heart's With Israel
A land that the Lord your God scrutinizes constantly; the eyes of the Lord
your God are on it from the beginning of the year until the end of the year.
Deuteronomy 11:12
As for the biblical importance of the Holy Land, we think that
needs no elaboration. Lesser known, however, is the origin of the
flag of the modern state of Israel featured on this T-Shirt. It is
actually a carryover of the flag of the World Zionist Organization
that first appeared in Rishon LeTzion (the "First to Zion", a city just
outside of Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean coast) in 1885 and that
was officially adopted by the Organization at the First Zionist
Congress in Basel, Switzerland, in 1897. The flag was adopted by
the Speaker of the Provisional Council of State on October 28,
1948, (only with slightly darker blue stripes and star) after a
contest that brought in 450 different designs produced no clear
winner.

The six-pointed Star of David ("Magen David" in Hebrew, literally
the "Shield of David") that appears in its center is of unknown
origin. (In fact, it is believed that it did not originate with the Jewish
People, since it was and still is commonly used as a symbol of
protection in many other cultures.) Gershom Sholem asserted that
the Jews adopted the star in imitation of Christianity, as a parallel
decoration for houses of worship and Jewish homes invested with
as much deep symbolic and spiritual meaning as the Christian
cross. It is widely accepted that the stripes were inspired by the
blue ribbons that streak the "tallit" (prayer shawl) of Jewish men.
White and blue (along with gold and purple) were the colors of the
Kohen Gadol's (High Priest's) Temple garments and of the curtains
that enclosed the "Mishkan" (Tabernacle that traveled through the
desert). These origins have, for Jewish minds, rendered these two
colors the eternal symbols of the purity and spirituality of the
Jewish People. And the "kachol-lavan" (old blue-and-white) is
placed inside a heart because. . . well, that's where we hold her.
