Along with its religious and cultural history,
the Temple mount went through the British,
Israeli and Jordanian rule, each conducting
their own construction, re-construction and
archeological activities on the Mount.
The Temple mount has been the major focus of
religious attention in Jerusalem for some three
thousand years. In Jewish tradition, the site-Which
may have been an ancient cultic center before the
first temple was there constructed-Is mount
Moriah, where Abraham was ordered to sacrifice
his son Isaac. After king David had conquered
Jerusalem, an alter was built on the same mount.
The First Temple was built on the site during king
Solomon’s reign, and it continued to exist until it’s
destruction in 586 BCE.
This book brings you the remarkable archaeological
discoveries from the different excavations,
including picture and detailed description.
After the return of the Babylonian exiles, the Second Temple was erected. It was to exist for some six
hundred years, till it’s destruction in 70 CE. The Temple Mount enclosure in it’s final form was the work
of king Herod. It was the greatest construction achievement in the history of the land of Israel, and one
of the greatest in the ancient world as a whole.
