The town of Korazim(Chorazin) is forst mentioned in the first/second centuries CE, in the new testament, along with Bethsaida and Capernaum. These three towns were condemned by Jesus because they did not accept his teachings.
|
The town is mentioned again, apparently in the
second century CE source, in connection with
bringing the omer to the Temple.
Eusebius, relating to the references to the town in
the New Testament, describes Korazim as a ruined
village in his days.
Peter Deacon(Sixth century CE), based on the
fourth and fifth century sources, mentions the town
and the references to it in the New Testament; he
also mentions the repeated attempts of the Jews to
build a synagogue there, noting that whatever they
had built during the day was destroyed overnight.
Being of special interests to Christendom, Korazim
was frequently mentioned by scholars and travelers
to the Holy land.
Excavations were performed in 1906-1909;
1920s; 1962-1964; 1980-1987.
During the 1980-1987 excavations, about thirty
probes were dug in the synagogue and its vicinity.
This Israel Antiquities Authority publication brings
you the archaeological story of the Korazim
Synagogue in English and Hebrew.
